From Bench to Beside: The Clinical Applications of Our Research
The ultimate goal of our basic research program is to apply our scientific discoveries towards the development of novel epigenetic based diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic tools. The Shi lab has an exemplary record of innovation, with Dr. Shi holding multiple patents for his novel discoveries and their clinical applications. Namely, Dr. Shi was the first to identify the therapeutic role of statins and LSD1/2 inhibitors in cancer treatment and to apply the detection of 5-hydroxymethylcytosine as a diagnostic tool in cancer. Our lab maintains this innovative momentum, with a focus on:
- Repurposing old therapeutics, such as metformin, towards novel applications
- Identifying diagnostic biomarkers specific to early and late onset Alzheimer’s disease and various cancer types
